Why Property Owners Should Measure Mobile Connectivity

Today, tenants, visitors, and property staff expect reliable mobile connectivity wherever they are. But how can you be sure that coverage meets expectations throughout your building?

At Allicon, we help property owners answer that question through a connectivity assessment that maps the actual mobile radio environment inside a building. To explain the value of these assessments, we spoke with our Head of 5G Radio, Mickael Lauritsen.

What challenges does a connectivity assessment help uncover?

A connectivity assessment can identify insufficient coverage from one or more mobile operators, affecting both tenants and the property owner's own staff. This is particularly important because operations and maintenance personnel often work in basements and technical areas where coverage may be weaker, which can also present a safety risk.

For some businesses, such as retail stores, the mobile network is used to process card payments. Poor or non-existent coverage can therefore impact both business operations and the customer experience.

What insights do property owners typically gain?

Many buildings have in-building mobile coverage systems that were designed based on the original construction drawings. While these systems may have performed well when the building was first occupied, conditions change over time. Mobile operators continuously develop their networks, new buildings are constructed nearby, and network traffic patterns evolve. All of this affects the radio environment.

Renovations and tenant fit-outs within the building can also reduce coverage quality—even in properties where an in-building coverage system is already installed.

A fact-based foundation for investment decisions

A connectivity assessment provides property owners with a clear picture of how mobile networks actually perform throughout the building.

We deliver a fact-based report showing where coverage gaps exist or where the radio environment fails to meet acceptable levels in terms of signal strength, quality, or interference. Using these findings together with our expertise in mobile networks, we can recommend solutions that address the identified issues.

What is the biggest benefit for property owners?

The greatest value is being able to make investment decisions based on reliable data. Property owners gain a clear understanding of which measures are actually needed to meet the expectations of tenants and visitors. Today, good indoor mobile coverage from all mobile operators is no longer a luxury—it is a basic requirement and an essential part of a building's digital infrastructure.
