Hemsö

Hemsö is expanding welfare technology and digital infrastructure in nursing homes

Hemsö is the leading owner of properties for public use in Sweden, managing and developing properties for nursing homes, education, healthcare, and the legal system. Their operations are characterized by long-term thinking and sustainability. The "Internetlyftet" project is aimed at enhancing the digital infrastructure for communication in nursing homes.

In Hemsö's work with nursing homes, it has become clear that something as fundamental as access to reliable internet connectivity for residents is often absent. At the same time, the government aims to increase the use of digital welfare technology in elderly care as a means to improve the quality of life, independence, and security of seniors. The question Hemsö asked itself was how, as property owners, they could help create good conditions for internet connectivity for all users in their properties.

Pilot Projects Across Sweden

In 2021, Allicon, in collaboration with Hemsö, conducted a joint pre-study focusing on nursing homes. This pre-study resulted in a concept called "Internetlyftet," which involved selecting ten nursing homes in various locations across Sweden, with a total area of approximately 50,000 square meters, as pilot sites.

In the project “Internetlyftet”, Allicon has been assisting Hemsö with both strategic advice as well as the establishment and operation of a foundational digital infrastructure and communication platform in the pilot properties. All properties have been equipped with fiber networks, high-capacity internet access, and widespread Wi-Fi networks. Simultaneously, the properties were prepared for the deployment of indoor 5G mobile coverage solutions. Internetlyftet also addressed Hemsö's needs for efficient property IT, data-driven and sustainable management, and property automation.

Technical Solution

  • High-capacity internet service via fiber to the building, delivered to a secure space.

  • Installation of a well-documented and standardized fiber property network according to Robust Fiber, prepared for future deployment of active indoor 5G mobile networks.

  • Installation of Cat6 distribution networks as an extension of the fiber property network for the connection of Wi-Fi access points.

  • Radio planning and establishment of a complete coverage, managed, and segmented Wi-Fi network with high security tailored to the property's different user groups.

  • The entire solution is digitally documented through Allicon's PropView® system, where all changes in the network environment are updated in real-time.

Business Model

  • By establishing a common infrastructure for wireless internet access for all user groups in the properties, the cost decreases significantly compared to each party establishing their own infrastructure. This also creates a willingness to pay and a sustainable business model.

  • The solution is funded through rental income, healthcare operators, and suppliers, as well as through reduced own connectivity costs as previous solutions can be terminated.

Benefits for Hemsö

  • Addressed digital exclusion.

  • Satisfied users.

  • Valuable insights for Hemsö in their ongoing digitalization efforts with their property portfolio.

  • A sustainable solution where both property owners, residents, and healthcare operators can utilize the same infrastructure.

"The collaboration with Allicon has helped us take on greater social responsibility in several nursing homes by ensuring easy and reliant access to high-quality internet for all users. At the same time, they have provided valuable insights for our ongoing digitalization journey. The rollout project and ongoing operation managed by Allicon have worked very well!"
